Why it matters
Why camera insurance matters
- Cameras and lenses are valuable, portable and easy to damage or have stolen on a shoot.
- Home contents cover usually won't protect gear once you take it out to work or travel.
- A pro lens or camera body can cost tens of thousands of rand to replace.
- Accidental drops and knocks are a real risk when shooting on location or on the move.
- You can often specify each item so your full kit is covered for its true value.

Camera insurance questions
Does this cover professional or paid photography?
Some all-risk policies are for personal use only, while others allow semi-professional or professional work, sometimes at a different premium. If you shoot for income, this distinction matters for a valid claim. Always confirm whether commercial use is covered before relying on a policy.
Are my lenses and accessories included?
Lenses, flashes, tripods and bags can usually be added, either specified individually or under an equipment limit. Since lenses often outvalue the camera body, listing them properly is important. Check how each policy treats accessories, and total your kit's value when comparing cover.
Is my gear covered while travelling?
All-risk camera cover generally follows your equipment away from home, including on trips, though some policies limit cover outside South Africa. If you travel to shoot, check the geographic limits and any conditions on leaving gear unattended. Compare a few policies to match how you work.
What proof do I need to insure and claim?
Insurers typically want purchase invoices or serial numbers to set values, plus a police case number for theft claims. Keeping a simple inventory of bodies, lenses and serials makes both cover and claims easier. Check each insurer's requirements so nothing holds up a future claim.
