Why it matters

Why sports equipment insurance matters

  • Specialist gear like surfboards, racquets, skis and bats can be expensive to replace.
  • Equipment spends much of its life away from home, where contents cover rarely reaches.
  • Kit is exposed to theft from cars, changing rooms, clubs and public sports venues.
  • Accidental damage during training or a match is a genuine risk for active players.
  • Higher-value items can be specified individually so they're covered for their full worth.

FAQ

Sports equipment insurance questions

What kinds of sports equipment can be covered?
All-risk cover can include a wide range of gear, such as surfboards, tennis and squash racquets, cricket and hockey kit, skis, snowboards and gym equipment. Some specialist or high-risk gear may have conditions. List what you own and its value when comparing so everything important is covered.
Is my gear covered during competitions?
Many policies cover use in training and organised competition, though some exclude high-risk or professional participation. Because damage and theft are common at events, this matters for competitive players. Confirm that your sport and level of participation are included before relying on the cover.
Does it cover accidental damage, not just theft?
Yes, all-risk sports cover generally includes accidental damage from impacts and mishaps during use, subject to an excess. Normal wear, tear and gradual deterioration are excluded. Since gear takes a beating in play, check the excess and what qualifies as accidental damage when comparing.
How is this different from my home contents cover?
Home contents cover focuses on items at home and often limits sports equipment, leaving it exposed at the club, beach or field. All-risk sports cover follows the gear wherever you use it. If you train and compete regularly, dedicated cover is usually worth comparing for the extra protection.
