Why it matters
Why tyre & rim cover matters
- Potholes are widespread on South African roads and can wreck a tyre or rim in an instant.
- A single alloy rim and matching tyre can cost thousands of rand to replace.
- Comprehensive car insurance often excludes tyre and rim damage that isn't part of an accident.
- Cover helps you get back on the road quickly without a large, unexpected bill.
- It's handy for larger alloys and low-profile tyres, which are pricier and more easily damaged.

Tyre and rim insurance questions
Doesn't my car insurance already cover tyre damage?
Usually only when the tyre is damaged in an insured accident. Damage from a pothole or road debris on its own is commonly excluded from comprehensive cover. Tyre and rim insurance fills that gap, which is why many South African drivers add it separately.
What kinds of damage are excluded?
Normal tread wear, ageing and manufacturing defects are generally not covered, since this is hazard cover rather than a replacement guarantee. Damage from racing or off-road use may also be excluded. Check each plan's covered events and claim limits when comparing.
Is there a limit on how many claims I can make?
Many plans cap the number of tyres or rims per year or over the policy term. Once you reach the limit, further replacements are for your own account until it resets. Compare the annual claim limits alongside the premium so you know exactly what you're getting.
Does it cover run-flat and low-profile tyres?
Often yes, though these can carry different limits because they cost more to replace. Since larger alloys and low-profile tyres are more prone to pothole damage, the cover can be especially useful. Confirm your wheel and tyre type is included before you buy.
