Bicycle Insurance

Cover your bike against theft and accidents

Why it matters

Why bicycle insurance matters

  • Quality road and mountain bikes are high-value and heavily targeted by thieves in South Africa.
  • Home contents cover often won't pay out for a bike stolen away from home or damaged on a ride.
  • A serious crash can damage a carbon frame or components that cost thousands to replace.
  • Cover can extend to races and events, where crashes and theft are real risks.
  • You can usually specify the bike for its full value, plus add cycling gear and accessories.

FAQ

Bicycle insurance questions

Is my bike covered if it's stolen away from home?
That's a key reason to take bicycle cover. All-risk bicycle insurance follows the bike away from home, so theft from a car rack, event or trailhead can be covered. Home contents cover often won't. Check any security conditions, such as locking requirements, when you compare policies.
Am I covered during races and events?
Many policies cover competitive riding and organised events, but some exclude racing or charge more for it. Since crashes and theft are common at events, this matters for keen cyclists. Confirm that racing and the specific events you enter are included before you rely on the cover.
Does it cover accidental damage while riding?
All-risk bicycle cover usually includes accidental damage from crashes, falls and impacts, subject to an excess. General wear, mechanical faults and puncture repairs are typically excluded. Check what counts as accidental damage and the excess on frames and components when comparing.
Can I add my helmet and cycling gear?
Yes, many insurers let you extend cover to helmets, shoes, cycling computers and other accessories, either specified or under a gear limit. As this kit adds up, it's worth including. Compare how each policy handles accessories and total your gear's value so you're properly covered.
