Car Insurance Cost by Cover Type in South Africa

Published 15 September 2026

The cover level you choose is the single biggest lever on what car insurance costs. Based on Savvy Insurance quote data, comprehensive cover averages about R1,100 a month, third-party, fire and theft about R420, and third-party only about R210, with an overall average across all cover types of R1,287.53. Here is what each level costs and how to choose. For how premiums are calculated and every factor that moves the price, see our car insurance cost guide.

How much does each level of car insurance cost?

Based on Savvy Insurance quote data:

Cover type Average monthly premium
Comprehensive about R1,100
Third party, fire and theft about R420
Third party only about R210
All cover types (overall average) R1,287.53

Comprehensive costs the most because it does the most: it covers your own car for accidents, theft, fire and weather, plus damage you cause to others. Third-party options cost far less because they cover less.

Why is comprehensive cover so much more expensive?

Because it carries far more risk for the insurer. Comprehensive pays out for damage to your own car, which is where most claims happen, so the premium reflects the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle. Third-party only covers damage you cause to other people, so the insurer's exposure, and your premium, is a fraction of the cost.

Is the cheapest cover the best value?

Not usually. Third-party at around R210 a month looks attractive, but it pays nothing towards your own car if you crash, and nothing for theft. For most people with a car worth protecting, comprehensive is better value despite the higher premium. Third-party makes sense mainly for older, low-value cars where a write-off would not be a financial blow. See our comparison of comprehensive versus third-party.

What else changes the price within a cover level?

A lot. Two drivers on comprehensive can pay very different premiums depending on age, where they live, the car, their claims history, their excess and security features. Those factors are the same across all cover types.
