What's covered

What handbag insurance covers

Theft & snatching

Cover if your bag is stolen or snatched, including from a car, a restaurant or in public.

Loss

Protection if the bag is accidentally lost while you are out.

Accidental damage

Damage to the bag itself, such as a spill, a tear or a broken clasp.

Why it matters

Why insure your handbag

  • A handbag goes everywhere with you, so it is exposed to theft and snatching far more than items left at home.
  • Designer and luxury handbags can be worth as much as a piece of jewellery, well above a home policy's single-item limit.
  • Home contents cover usually stops working the moment you leave your front door.
  • All-risk cover follows the bag wherever you carry it, from the shops to a night out.
  • Specifying a valuable bag with proof of value sets an agreed amount and avoids a shortfall at claim time.

FAQ

Handbag insurance questions

Isn't my handbag covered by home contents insurance?
Home contents cover generally protects items inside your home, so a handbag snatched in a parking lot or lost at a restaurant may not be covered. Handbag insurance, as all-risk cover, follows the bag away from home, which is exactly where the risk is highest.
Does it cover a designer or luxury handbag?
Yes, though a high-value bag should usually be specified individually with proof of value, because it can exceed the single-article limit that applies to unspecified items. Specifying it sets an agreed value and makes sure the payout reflects what the bag is really worth.
Are the contents of my bag covered too?
It depends on the policy. Some all-risk cover extends to certain contents, while a phone, sunglasses or jewellery inside may need to be specified separately. Check what is included and what needs listing, so there are no gaps if the whole bag is taken.
What do I need to claim for a stolen handbag?
Insurers usually ask for proof of ownership or value, such as a receipt or valuation, and a police case number for theft or snatching. Reporting promptly and keeping proof of your more valuable bags makes claims smoother. Compare each insurer's requirements before you buy.
