What hearing aid insurance covers

Theft & loss

Covers hearing aids that are stolen or accidentally lost, including a device dropped or misplaced.

Accidental damage

Worn anywhere

Protection at home and out and about, wherever you need them.

Why it matters

Why hearing aid insurance matters

  • Hearing aids are small, worn all day and easily lost, dropped or damaged by moisture.
  • Modern hearing aids are costly, and replacing a pair can run to many thousands of rand.
  • Home contents cover generally won't help once the devices leave your home.
  • Being without a hearing aid affects daily life, so quick replacement really matters.
  • You can usually specify the devices for their full value and cover both of a pair.

FAQ

Hearing aid insurance questions

Aren't hearing aids covered by my medical aid?
A medical scheme may contribute to the initial purchase, but that's separate from insuring the devices against loss or damage afterwards. Hearing aid insurance covers theft, loss and accidental damage once they're yours. Check what your scheme offers, then compare cover for the risks it doesn't handle.
Is accidental damage and moisture covered?
All-risk hearing aid cover usually includes accidental damage from drops, knocks and moisture, which are common ways these devices fail, subject to an excess. Gradual wear and battery replacement are generally excluded. Check the terms on moisture and accidental damage when you compare policies.
Can I cover both hearing aids?
Yes. A pair can be specified so both devices are insured for their full value, which is important since they're usually worn and replaced together. Confirm whether the cover treats the pair as one item or two, and check the limits and excess when comparing quotes.
What do I need to insure and claim?
Insurers typically ask for proof of purchase, the make, model and serial numbers, and a police case number for theft claims. Keeping this information and your receipt makes claims smoother. Check each insurer's requirements so a lost or damaged device can be replaced without delay.
