Why it matters

Why jewellery insurance matters

  • Fine jewellery is valuable, easily lost and a common target for theft and snatching.
  • Home contents cover often caps jewellery and rarely covers it once you leave the house.
  • A lost stone or stolen ring can carry deep sentimental as well as financial value.
  • Specifying high-value pieces means they're insured for their full, agreed worth.
  • A recent valuation certificate helps set the right cover amount and speeds up claims.

FAQ

Jewellery insurance questions

Do I need a valuation for my jewellery?
For higher-value pieces, insurers usually ask for a recent jewellery valuation or purchase receipt to set the insured amount. This ensures you're covered for the correct value and helps at claim time. Keep valuations up to date, as gold and gemstone prices change over the years.
Is my engagement ring covered if I lose a diamond?
All-risk jewellery cover typically includes accidental loss and damage, such as a stone falling from its setting. There's usually an excess, and some insurers may require the piece to be checked periodically. Confirm the terms for stone loss and settings when you compare cover.
Can't I just rely on my home contents policy?
Home contents cover often limits jewellery to a set amount and mainly protects it inside your home. Since jewellery is worn out and about, that leaves a gap. All-risk jewellery cover follows the pieces wherever you go, which is why many people insure valuables separately.
How do I insure an inherited or heirloom piece?
Heirlooms can be specified individually once you have a valuation reflecting current worth, including any antique or craftsmanship value. Because sentimental items are irreplaceable, adequate cover matters. Ask insurers how they handle antique and inherited jewellery, and compare limits before deciding.
