Why it matters
Why eyewear insurance matters
- Prescription glasses and designer sunglasses can be surprisingly expensive to replace.
- Eyewear is easily lost, sat on, scratched or dropped in the course of a normal day.
- Home contents cover generally won't help once your glasses leave the house.
- Prescription lenses in particular can cost a great deal to remake correctly.
- You can specify high-value frames so they're covered for their full replacement value.

Eyewear insurance questions
Are prescription lenses covered, not just frames?
All-risk eyewear cover generally includes both frames and prescription lenses, which is important because lenses often cost more than the frames. Terms vary between insurers, so check whether specialist coatings and high-index lenses are fully covered. Comparing policies helps if you wear costly eyewear.
Is accidental damage like scratches included?
Accidental damage such as scratched lenses, bent frames and breakages is usually covered, subject to an excess. Gradual wear and minor cosmetic marks may be excluded. Since eyewear takes daily knocks, check what counts as accidental damage and the excess before choosing a policy.
Can I add eyewear to another all-risk policy?
Yes. Glasses and sunglasses can be specified under a portable possessions (all-risk) policy alongside your other valuables, or covered on their own. For a single expensive pair, standalone cover may suit. Compare both so you're not paying more than the eyewear's replacement value.
Is it worth insuring everyday sunglasses?
It depends on their value. For budget sunglasses, the premium may outweigh the benefit, but for designer or prescription sunglasses the cover can make sense. Weigh the replacement cost against the premium and excess. Comparing quotes helps you decide whether standalone or combined cover is best.
