Why insuring for the right value matters

If you insure your contents for less than their full replacement value, most insurers apply “average” when you claim - they cut your payout in proportion to how much you under-insured. Insure for the full new-for-old value and review it each year so you are paid out in full.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my home contents value?
Go room by room and add up what it would cost to replace everything new - furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, linen and kitchenware. This replacement (new-for-old) total is your sum insured. It is almost always higher than people expect, which is why under-insurance is so common.
What happens if I under-insure my contents?
If you insure your contents for less than their full replacement value, most insurers apply 'average' at claim time - they reduce your payout in proportion to how much you under-insured. Insure for the full value, and review it each year, to be paid out in full.
Is this contents calculator accurate?
It gives a solid estimate to work from, not a formal valuation. Use it as a starting point, then confirm exact sums insured and high-value item limits with your insurer. Specify high-value items like jewellery and electronics separately if required.
